Dick Roberts
Dick Roberts coordinated the California state and federally funded after-school programs in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). These programs, delivered by 26 different community based agencies across the city, presently operate at over 550 elementary, middle and high schools involving about 100,000 students on a daily basis.
In October 2000, Roberts helped to form LAUSD’s Beyond the Bell Branch in that now manages all extended day programs in the District, including the District’s permissive recreational Youth Services programs at 515 elementary and middle schools, No Child Left Behind Supplemental Educational Services, and a number of other Title I intervention programs.
Previous to Beyond the Bell, Dick worked in LAUSD’s Northeast San Fernando Valley to establish Project GRAD Los Angeles, a total school reform effort in high schools and their middle and elementary feeder systems, which is headed on a national basis by Project GRAD Houston and the Ford Foundation. He has also spearheaded systemic efforts in LAUSD for service learning, and school-based mental and physical health services.
Dick Roberts retired from LAUSD March 1, 2007. He has subsequently been active in various in-school and afterschool reform efforts and serves on such committees and foundations as the California Afterschool Network Leadership Team and the Los Angele County Educational Foundation. He holds Masters Degrees in Counseling and English Literature and credentials in Secondary Teaching, Special Education, Counseling, and Administration.
