Sample Curriculum: Roadmap Outline

Week 1, Lesson 1
  1. Take attendance. Keeping track of attendance is very important to your program.
  2. Introduce yourself; tell the students why are you teaching this course.
  3. Fill out the Media Literacy Survey with the class.
  4. Discussion: Find out what kind of movies the students enjoy watching. Why do they like them? What was the last movie they saw? Why did they choose to see this movie? This discussion will help you to get to know your students very fast.
  5. Pass out Freshi Image Release Forms – explain to the students why it’s important they get returned to you.
  6. Introduce the students to Freshiflix.com, Freshifilmcamp.com and Freshifilmfest.com and, if they have an email address, have them sign up on the site or get the necessary info from them and sign them up on the site later. If the students are 13 years old or younger, their parents must sign them up or fill out a Freshi Internet Permission Slip.
Week 1, Lesson 2
  1. Discuss Story Structure – beginning/middle/end
  2. Introduce Storyboarding
  3. Show Part 1 Freshi TV: A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words.
  4. Break class into Film Crews of 5-6.
  5. Introduce Project #1: Stop Motion Animation
  6. The students choose a theme and the film crews begin to development and storyboard their ideas.
Week 2, Lesson 3
  1. Project #1: Capture movie footage in sequences less than 6 seconds long
  2. Save and label all footage
Week 2, Lesson 4
Media Literacy Activity #1 – Television Commercials: Download some television commercials that sell products to your students’ age group. Talk to the class about the product being sold and discuss what aspects of the commercial make the student like or want to have the product and why.
  1. Project #1: Continue capturing footage. Encourage students to move the camera to get different angles on the scene.
Week 3, Lesson 5
  1. Project #1: Music, Edits and Credits
  2. Watch all completed films
Week 3, Lesson 6
  1. Jobs in the Film Crew:
    Screenwriter
    Director
    Director of Photography
    Gaffer
    Editor
    Actor
  2. Discuss each job and its duties.
  3. Pass out the Freshi Film Crew Sheet and have the crews fill out the names of each Crewmember and the Film Crew Name. They will fill out the job positions when they begin Project #3.
  4. Introduce camera shots to the students by showing them Freshi TV iReel DVD: Part Two - Lights! Camera! Action!
Week 4, Lesson 7 – Scavenger Hunt
  1. Explain all the shots on the Freshi Filmworx Terminology Sheet.
  2. Instruct the students in set etiquette (Quiet on the set! Roll Camera, Action, and Cut).
  3. Introduce Project #2 – The Scavenger Hunt for Camera Shots
  4. Send the film crews out to do the Scavenger Hunt
Week 4, Lesson 8 – Scavenger Hunt Editing
  1. The students bring all Scavenger Hunt Footage into the Editing portion of Digital Blue.
  2. Each crew will create a short film using the footage they shot.
  3. Encourage the students to use this footage explore all the visual and sound effects in the Digital Blue program.
  4. The students must title and add credits to the final edit of the Scavenger Hunt footage.
Week 5, Lesson 9 – Project #3, Live Action Short Film
Media literacy activity #2 – News Programs
  1. Project #3: Film Crews work on new, Live Action, story: beginning, middle and end.
  2. The students Pitch their story to the Freshi Teacher.
  3. The students work on storyboards or scripts.
Week 5, Lesson 10
Media literacy activity #3 – Discuss the information the students gathered at home on Newscasts.
Week 6, Lesson 11
  1. The Location Scout
  2. Location Permit Application
  3. Cast and Rehearse the films.
Week 6, Lesson 12
  1. Principle Photography begins.
  2. The students should run their set according to the set etiquette they learned. They should also use proper camera terms when discussing the shots.
  3. Make sure the dialog is loud enough to be picked up by the camera.
Week 7, Lesson 13
  1. Project 3: Continue Principle photography.
  2. Download, watch and label all footage.
  3. Review the storyboards and check that all shots have been taken.
Week 7, Lesson 14
  1. Project #3 – Editing
  2. Begin Project #4 – Live Action/ Stop Motion Film. Create new film crews with the students who are not editing Project #3.
  3. Give the students a theme for the project.
  4. This project will be stop motion and live action combined.
Week 8, Lesson 15
  1. Project #3 - Editing, add Special FX, Credits
  2. Project #4: Pre-Production, finalize Storyboards, Location Scout and Permits
Week 8, Lesson 16
  1. Project #3 - Create the Musical Score, introduce the DM2 Music Mixer.
  2. Project #4 - Principle Photography
Week 9, Lesson 17
  1. Project #4 Principle Photography continues
Week 9, Lesson 18
Media Literacy Activity #4 – Movie Trailer Analysis
  1. Project #4 - Editing
Week 10, Lesson 19
  1. Project #4 - Editing, add Visual and Sound FX, create Credits, Create the Musical Score
Week 10, Lesson 20
  1. Project #5: The Joke Movie
  2. Students tell short jokes to each other then decide which joke to turn into a short film.
  3. The students complete the film in one class period.
Week 11, Lesson 21
  1. Project #6: Super Scavenger Hunt
  2. This SSH covers shooting, the order in which to create drop the shots into the timeline and editing.
  3. The students complete this activity in one class period.
Week 11, Lesson 22
  1. Project #7: The 32 Second Animation
  2. The students must create a stop motion animated film that is exactly 32 seconds long.
  3. The students must do the math to figure out how much they actually have to shoot.
  4. They are given specific details to include in their story.
  5. The students complete this activity in one class period.
Week 12, Lesson 23
Media Literacy Activity #5 – Historical Documentaries
  1. Project #8 - A Documentary About Your School
  2. Students research the history of the school using books, articles and the Internet.
Week 12, Lesson 24
  1. Project #8 - Editing, add VO (Narrator’s Dialog), create Credits, Create the Musical Score
Week 13, Lesson 25
  1. Project #8 - Principle Photography for documentary
  2. Record interviews of School Administrators to get more information.
  3. Get interior and exterior shoots of school.
  4. Write the narrator’s dialog.
Week 13, Lesson 26
Wrap up Production Day – Make sure all films are finished and ready for screening.
Week 14, Lesson 27
Film Festival/ Wrap Party Prep Day – Discuss Movie Marketing. Create posters, flyers, make announcements over the loud speaker, and send invitations to teachers and School Administrators.

Display marketing materials all over the school.
Week 14, Lesson 28
That’s a Wrap Party and It’s a Film Festival

The films are screened and Filmmakers discuss and answer questions from the screening audience regarding their film.

Filmmakers receive completion certificates.

Filmmakers receive DVD of all the films from the class.
